New restaurants are popping up all over the place lately in Downtown Mobile, Alabama. The Dumb Waiter is one, located on Dauphine Street in the heart of Downtown Mobile, I had the pleasure of trying recently. The decor is really interesting. I'm not sure if you would call it modern but there are these old, vintage style light bulbs hanging from the ceiling by webs of old ropes that look like they may have come from an old shrimp boat. Wall to wall exposed brick and vintage paintings adorn the walls; this place is spacious to say the least, and that's a good thing because every time I have been in there or walked by it is packed to the gills.
Chef Chris McElhaney studied under famed Louisiana Chef Emeril Lagasse and his menu is as interesting as the decor. I had the pork belly which I was very happy with. They also offer Locally Farmed Gulf Oysters as well as Cold Water Oysters. A few other stars on the menu are Chef Chris' Shrimp and Grits, Alabama Benedict and the Dumb Waiter Burger. Deserts include Chocolate and Cherry Bread Pudding with Bourbon Caramel and Whipped Cream, Blueberry cream pie in a jar, Rustic Lemon Tart with Cream Cheese Crust and Citrus Vodka Infused Whipped Cream.
